This web site is a non-government web site and is a conduit to let our MLA's and other government officials in British Columbia know, that we as residents of this Province will not tolerate unsafe roads.
Our first mandate is to establish road divider barriers on the Transcanada Highway from Goldstream Park to Mill Bay - also known as the Malahat. In the past year there have been four fatalities and numerous collisions due to drivers crossing the centre line. This has to be stopped.
From 2006 to 2010, there were 288 reported traffic incidents, 193 injuries and seven deaths on the Malahat, which officially extends from Westshore Parkway in Langford to Frayne Road in Mill Bay. The Malahat Highway through Goldstream Park is a two lane, winding highway which is known for its steep grades. As a high use corridor, crashes do occur and closure durations for most serious crashes are between four and six hours. There have closures been closures for longer durations.
Please join us by letting HONOURABLE BLAIR LEKSTROM, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure know that this change is long over due. Please sign the petition below and let your voice be heard

BC GOV'T PROMISES $8 MILLION FOR THE MALAHAT
Good going TEAM!!! Many hours from many people helped with this commitment. This just proves that if you believe in something, you can change the way the government thinks. You do not have to be anti with negitive protests, positive dialog can be stronger. This article was just released... According to Lekstrom, the Malahat safety report is expected to out next spring (2012). In the mean time, how many more lives are going to be lost? Has this not been studied to death? There have been reports done by the CRD, RCM and now this one. Another waste of tax dollars that could be spent making the road safer. Why not just talk to the Malahat and Langford Fire Rescue and the RCMP? They respond to all of the accidents? Guess human logic does not work with politicians.
I would like to thank you for your support in our efforts. Riders for safety started advocating for improvements on Malahat in November of this year. We began sending our message by inviting our Minister Of Transportation (Blare Lekstrom, a fellow rider) and local MLA's to a short motorcycle parade from Ogden Point to the Legislature grounds. Almost 300 bikes and 400 riders turned out to the event and gave a moment of silence for all of the motorists (cars / bikes or otherwise). Minister Lekstrom did not show up to support the event and in fact replied with the comment, "We can't just go throwing down concrete medians on every inch of the BC highways". This was a gross exaggeration of the message. Our goal is a simple one. Finish installing concrete barriers on the Malahat from Goldstream through to Mill Bay. These medians have proven to isolate incidents and reduce fatalities to personal injury and property loss. The second most common excuse has been "it's an enforcement issue". Please let me be clear that medical conditions and sudden distractions can not be prevented by the presence of police enforcement. Police can only be present as much as their budget will allow. I was present for a meeting with the Director of highways and the Malahat Transportation Engineer on Nov. 28th, 2011. Although the DOT seemed interested in our concerns and showed a willingness to communicate. It was evident that there would be no progress made with the Malahat in the near future. In fact we were told that a new study of the Malahat is beginning and will be conducted internally within the DOT. There will be no unbiased subcontractor involved with the process. It is time to take the advocacy process to the next level.
On Feb. 27th, 2012... Riders for Safety Committee partnered with a local bike club will meet with Minister Lekstrom. During this meeting it is my goal to present Minister Lekstrom with a stack of letters from concerned residents, motorists and businesses which are affected every time the Malahat is closed. I will be constructing two form letters.... one for motorists and concerned individuals and one for business owners / managers who are affected by closures on the Malahat and do not have time to write a letter. However, it is most effective to receive letters which are composed by each individual. Please feel free to personalize a letter if you have time. Address your letter to Minister Lekstrom, print your contact information at the bottom of your letter (form or personalized) . And drop it off at any of the "Letter Drop Off Locations Listed Below". Address the unstamped envelope to "Kristy Falconer". *if you would like a copy of either letter (either for businesses or individuals) please email me.
